House Wren
This is a photo of a house wren. These little guys (~4 inches) are plentiful around the ranch darting around in the brush and thickets looking for insects and spiders to eat. They are calling to potential mates constantly. You can hear them much more often than you'll see them most of the year, but during the mating season they often hang out higher off the ground trying to attract a potential mate. -
Downy Woodpecker
A zoomed-in image. If you look closely you can see the woodpecker has small round flowers in its beak. These are what make up the reddish-purple fruiting things (called catkins) on the cottonwoods that look like bunches of grapes in the photos. -

Pairs of Bullock's Oriels arrive in spring (by the middle of April) here at the ranch to breed and nest. Their nests are intricately woven and look like baskets. They leave in late summer usually by the end of August.Click the button below to read more about this bird.

Red-tailed Hawk Nest with Adult and Chick
This nest is about 90 feet high up in a Ponderosa pine tree on the West Fork Carson River. The chick was recently born and is covered in white fluffy down feathers. A mated pair of red-tailed hawks breeds and has one or two chicks very early every spring. -
Red-tailed Hawks Eating Mourning Dove
An Adult Red-tailed Hawk killed a Mourning Dove along the West Carson River in our backyard and fed some of it to its fledgling. -
